Fire Department
The Makanda Township Fire Department (MTFD) is a mostly volunteer organization. Our operations focus on fire protection, rescue, and first response services. We have two fire stations, Station #1 at 5420 Old US Highway 51 and Station #2 at 5975 Giant City Road, Carbondale.

Highway Department
Makanda Township maintains side roads marked with lavender highlight in the map. Mowing, brush removal, oil and chip, culvert repairs, and snow removal are managed by township employees from the Highway Department building at 494 Hartline Rd.

Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP)
A CWPP Coordinator is available, who works with individual property owners to reduce the risk of wildfire on their properties, partners with other agencies to address potential hazards from wildfires, and conducts education outreach to interested community groups. See the linked page for details.
