On Saturday, September 6, Makanda Township Fire Department hosted a rare training event. Firefighters came from as far as St. Louis to participate. A Makanda homeowner donated a manufactured home that was still structurally sound but too expensive to update. Trainees ignited partial burns and practiced rescue and fire management in repeated scenarios for the entire day. At the end, the unit was purposely burnt to the ground. Pictured left to right:

Our volunteers’ dedication to safety is cause for celebration and thanks!
Board members and department officials will attend a training by Clerk Crimson informing them about the new bookkeeping program and how transactions flow into financial reports that supply data for budgeting. This is training only (primarily for Board members), not for the discussion of Township business matters. Financial Planning & Advisory committee members are invited. Members of the public are welcome, if there are seats available in the venue.

Highway Commissioner Hoke was informed that on Tuesday evening 7/15/2025, there were break-ins and break-in attempts at several locations around the Stone Creek / Hartline Rd area, at some homes, businesses and in vehicles. The Jackson County Sheriff’s office investigated and have arrested suspects, possibly juveniles.
Open Meetings of Township officials, including Committee meetings, require meeting agendas to be publicly posted at least 48 hours in advance of the meeting.
I will be posting all submitted agendas on this website in the Documents page, as soon as they are submitted, or in the case of Regular Township Board meetings, by the Friday or Saturday prior to the second Tuesday of the month.
Paper copies will be posted in two public locations no later than 2 days prior to the meeting. Those locations will be
- The entry door for the location where the meeting will be held
- The door of the Makanda Township Highway Department, 494 Hartline Rd, Makanda IL 62958
For regular monthly Board meetings, Agenda Posting Location #1 will be Unity Point School (Boskydell entrance).
For other open meetings, Agenda Posting Location #1 will vary based on the group’s scheduled meeting site.
*Update 8/20/2025: For meetings held at 494 Hartline Rd, Agenda Posting Location #2 will be Fire Station 1.
